For many years the art world was not at all interested in a quiet Englishman who made detailed Art Nouveau inspired ink drawings, but for Christopher Leach that isolation has worked to his advantage as he has developed a strong and unique character. Born in 1949 he later attended the art school in his hometown of Stafford and also at Maidstone where the life models included the to become famous Quentin Crisp. He has always been interested in the erotic and his own playful sexuality now completely fills his pictures. Maybe he is not quite Picasso but like the great master Christopher feels that not only has he created his own little world, future generations will greatly value his surreal vision of our disfunctional yet exciting times. Even though the artist was connected with the fetish scene and wrote a column for Berlin’s Twilight Magazin, he doesn’t believe he is a fetish artist in the conventional sense as he gets just as much pleasure from drawing bikini-lines and tram-lines. In 1992 he staged a one-man exhibition in Amsterdam, and as well as showing his work at events like London’s Torture Garden he has been published worldwide in underground and alternative magazines. Things are now definitely on the way up for in December 2003 he will be hanging work at the important Florence Biennale in Italy.
